I am delighted to share the news that writer and curator has written an essay about a number of my works over the last five years:

“Rona Lee understands that humans are compulsive meaning makers who deplore a vacuum. Her work elevates the inscrutable and embraces taxonomic messiness against our classificatory impulse to define and control the world. Can we understand something by naming it? Lee’s work suggests not, instead she unravels and destabilises our relationship to the natural world, moving beyond binaries and definitions. Her work evidences the ways in which nature persists despite human intervention. In looking at her images, we’re reminded that the natural world resists our regulation. We’re living in the twilight of a certain set of stories built around a human obsession with control. In seeking a realignment with the natural world, Lee suggest a new role for humans humbled by their hubris. A world in which empathy is as important as knowability”.

New work made over the last year – pages from mid century coffee-table books (originating in the post war ‘golden age of capitalism’  a time in which Western Economies boomed) are overlayed with images of high-end contemporary interiors the windows and doors of which have been torn open. Primates gaze towards upholstered furniture, huge flowers reach in from generous gardens and fungi push towards plush bedrooms – haunting the present with edenic images of a depleted world.

I am delighted to be showing two new video/ photo-collage works, made in response to the collections and archives of the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Science, in their Whewell Mineral Gallery. Marking a significant intervention within the gallery’s displays these works disrupt their operation as part of a system in which geo/scientific study of the Earth is positioned as neutral and objective, challenging us to think about the ways in which Geological Collections, rather than evidencing our knowledge of the Earth, offer an index of our entanglements with it.

On June 27th I will be giving an evening tour of the work, followed by an in conversation event with Ayesha Landon-Browne, geochemist at the University of Cambridge, Dr Liz Hide, Director, Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, and Rob Theodore, Exhibitions and Displays Co-ordinator, Sedgwick Museum of Earth Science.
